Pingyao Ancient City
is the only one of China which is admitted to the list of World Heritage by UNESCO. It is
one of China's most well-preserved ancient twons along with Xi'an, capital of Shanxi,
Jiangling om Hubei, and Xingcheng in Liaoning It was a military and commercial centre for
2,000 years, and during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911) parts of the town were
either rebuilt or repaired. Visitors to Pingyao are amazed by this small Chinese town
complete with temples. Traditional archiecture, city walls, battlements and watchtowers.
The well-preserved "Ri Sheng Chang Money Exchange Shop" located in the west
street is the first Remittance Bank of China. The south street is the well known antique
shop street where you may find a big variety of historical relics left by the Shanxi
merchants.
