Scholar Tree in Hongtong County
During the turbulent years between the Yuan and the Ming Dynasties, the Central Plains in
North China were devastated by continuous war and the population declined. Shanxi, in
contrast, maintained its prosperity. When the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu
Yuanzhang, decided to repopulate the eastern provinces with Shanxi People, the emigrants
were all assembled
And set off from the Big Chinese Scholar Tree. Since then, the ancient tree has become the
symbol of these emigrants' home town.
